The Schottenring is a part of the Wiener Ringstrasse and was named after the Schottenstift founded in 1155.

The present Landespolizeidirektion Wien at Schottenring 7-9 is located where the Ringtheater burned down in 1881 and where the Sühnehaus was built afterwards, which itself was heavily damaged in 1945.
